The first step is designing your landscape! During our online consultation, we will have you fill out a short survey so we can better understand the food-producing plants you most prefer, and the type of landscape that is best suited for your property and neighborhood.
We create our landscape using permaculture principles and can incorporate up to seven edible layers and ecological elements.
Did you know that micro clover is a low-maintenance groundcover that naturally fixes nitrogen and requires no mowing? Or that strawberries make an excellent groundcover for garden beds, suppressing weeds while providing a delicious harvest? Or that comfrey naturally enriches your soil, so you do not need to use artificial fertilizers?
These are examples of how we incorporate permaculture functions into our landscaping. We strategically integrate companion plants that enhance soil health, fix nitrogen, suppress weeds, attract pollinators, repel unwanted pests, and reduce the need for mowing.
Our clients see a remarkable boost in biodiversity after installation, with dozens of new birds, beneficial insects, and even inspired neighbors showing up to enjoy the transformation.
Once your custom foodscape design is complete, we don’t leave you wondering what to do next. Even though we do not offer installation services in this state, we make it easy for you to confidently install your new landscape on your own.
Every design package includes step-by-step guidance tailored to your property and your lifestyle, so you know exactly what to plant, where to plant it, and how to bring your vision to life.
You’ll receive:
- 2D diagrams that map out each planting area
- 3D renderings to help you visualize your new landscape
- Foodscape measurements and spacing details
- Foodscapers Hub network with other foodscapers
- A complete plant catalogue customized to your site
- Shopping guides so you can source everything locally
- Blueprints for beds, pathways, and structural elements
- Video tutorials showing how to install each part of your design
- Step-by-step instructions to make it easy to install
We even help you evaluate the size and pace of your installation based on your available time, capacity, and long-term goals—so your foodscape is empowering, not overwhelming.
Installing a foodscape shouldn’t feel overwhelming. That’s why our designs are built around mini ecological guilds—nature-based planting systems that make the installation process intuitive, organized, and far more successful than planting trees or shrubs alone.
An ecological guild is a thoughtfully planned companion-planting community that surrounds a fruit tree, berry bush, or vineyard area with supportive plants. These plants work together to build soil, fix nitrogen, attract pollinators, repel pests, and supress weeds.
Guilds remove the guesswork for you! Instead of wondering what goes where or which plants work together, you receive a ready-to-install blueprint for each space—making the process simple, structured, and headache-free.
Unlike planting a tree by itself (which leaves it vulnerable to pests, nutrient depletion, and poor soil conditions), a guild increases fertility and resilience naturally. The result is:
- Healthier, longer-living trees
- Stronger pest resistance
- Higher yields
- Better-tasting, less “bugged-out” produce
- A landscape that becomes richer and more abundant every year
We offer dozens of proven guild combinations that harmonize with your climate and property, giving you an installation plan that works with nature—not against it—so you can install a thriving foodscape with confidence.
Step-by-Step Installation Made Simple
At Edible Landscapes MN, we provide written and video tutorials to ensure your foodscape installation is seamless and stress-free. Along with step-by-step instructions, we supply a list of suggested equipment so you can easily install your design.
Your foodscape installation involves just five simple steps:
1. Measuring
2. Ground Preparation
3. Sourcing Plants
4. Planting
5. Protection
1. Measuring
We provide easy-to-use measurement documents so you know exactly where to place fruit trees, berry gardens, and vineyard spaces. All you need are a measurement wheel, string, stakes, and yard paint to mark your layout precisely
2. Ground Preparation
You have two options for preparing your garden beds:
- Fast Method: Rent a sod cutter to remove your lawn quickly.
- Organic Method: Use cardboard sheet mulching to naturally break down your lawn over a month.
We’ll also teach you to use an edging tool to create clean, professional edges between garden beds and lawn areas—one of the most important steps for a polished, beautiful foodscape.
We provide nursery options for organic soil, compost, and mulch, and if you’re creating vineyard spaces, we include video tutorials for setting posts with ease.
3. Sourcing Plants
We’ll provide a list of local and online nurseries to find all your plants, along with tips for easy transport to your site.
4. Planting
Once your plants are onsite, follow our video tutorials to plant trees, bushes, vines, and understory plants according to the blueprints we provide. Because your beds are already prepared, planting is smooth and straightforward.
5. Protection
The final step is protecting your plants from bunnies and deer. We provide tutorials on fencing options so your investment stays safe and thriving.
With our guidance, installing your own foodscape is easy, enjoyable, and rewarding!

We are a family-owned business operating in the Divine Will. Our mission is to help families and communities experience the joy of growing food at home. We do this by designing and installing “Edible Eden” landscapes that encourage sustainable backyard to fork living.
Our work is inspired by Catholic Social Teaching which emphasizes care for God’s creation, dignity of every person, the pursuit of the common good, the dignity of work, solidarity, localism, care for the poor, and active participation in the community.
Our organization’s garden patron is St. Francis of Assisi. He is the patron saint of ecology and animals. He embodies our vision to create abundant biodiverse environments that support pollinators, birds and other wildlife. St. Francis spoke about being instruments of peace and nurturing community. Our goal is to be an instrument of peace for every client, animal, insect and plant we encounter.

Founders

In 2019, I traveled to Eastern Europe, where I was amazed by the dacha houses on the outskirts of cities. These small homes were surrounded by vibrant gardens filled with food and life. Despite their modest size—no larger than an average American home lot—these plots provided 40% of a household’s food.
Motivated by this experience, our family decided to transform our own yard into a food forest.
Soon, other families began reaching out for help to create their own food forests. In the spring of 2023, we opened our doors to share this vision, and since then, we’ve helped build dozens of food-producing landscapes for dozens of MN families.
